Okay, so, Lucca’s mom got in a horrible addicent when Lucca was young. This motivated Lucca to study science for the betterment of humanity.
However, you can go back to that day and save Lana’s life. But this causes a time loop in the game.

Lucca’s diary entries don’t say that she is motivated to study science. One reads, “[…] I’ll study machines now. […]”, so we can’t say she had no interest in science. We can’t also say she had no interest in machinery and tools, since she probably watched her father working.
In the original Japanese script, the diary entry in question shows Lucca’s interest in “more details” about machines or learning about them more “in depth”, which may suggest that she already had at list a bit of interest in machines.
However, whether Lucca helps her mother (Lara) or not, she gains the motivation to study machines. If Lucca fails to save Lara, her diary will read, “If only I knew more about machines…” (it’s safe to assume that she is motivated). If Lucca succeeds in saving Lara, her diary entry is, “I feel like I’ve learned something! I’ll study machines now. There’ll be no more accidents around here.”
